Keep Warm this Winter

Updated: Dec 12, 2022

Hello ho ho ho!

We are now fully into the winter season, if you are in the colder climates of the world I hope you can stay warm this winter. During this time it is even more important to look after your voice. Especially if you are in shows and concerts but also if you have long meetings and presentations too. The cold, damp environment sadly is not good news for our chest and respiratory system. If we reduce the heating the moisture levels can be quite high and mould may appear. Dehumidifying is essential. However hot sterile steam is good for the voice. So get steaming with boiling water and keep those warm drinks flowing. There are some useful voice care products out on the market so steaming can be much more portable if you are on the road or away on tour. Hot steaming in the traditional sense is inhaling hot steam from freshly boiled water placed in a bowl with a towel over it to keep the steam in.

This is still highly effective and beneficial to the upper respiratory tract as it adds vital moisture right to the parts that need it most. It's quick and easy to use and relatively cost free. However if you want to try some of the fancy and perhaps safer (avoiding scalds from boiled water) electronic devices then see below for our recommended vocal mist steamer.

Keeping warm is not just about wearing appropriate clothing but also keeping active and eating warming foods and drinking warm soothing fluids. Here's my recipe for my special turmeric brew which is perfect for voice users as it helps fight inflammation. I like to start my day with it as part of my vocal wake up routine.

ZEN's Turmeric Brew (1cup/mug)

1/4 of fresh turmeric root crushed or a tsp of ground turmeric

a pinch of black pepper

1 star anise

A pinch of ground cinnamon or a few bits of a cinnamon stick

Optional (if you need a sweet kick) tsp honey or vegan alternative (agave/maple syrup)

Vocal Mist Steamer

VocalMist is recommended by Ear, Nose, and Throat doctors (ENTs), Speech-language pathologists (SLPs), and respiratory specialists as an effective treatment for allergies, chronic dry mouth and throat, Sjögren's syndrome, and respiratory illnesses. VocalMist is an effective therapeutic device for singers, voice-over actors, and public speakers, that produces clear results when used as recommended by your medical professional.

Seasons Greetings

Wishing you a magical winter season. Hope that 2023 brings more happiness and successes your way.

Much love and gratitude,

Marianne
